Dale Jr: All Set For A Winning Season

What happened or didn't happen to the 88 team last year and a look to the future.

Mr H said “It drives me nuts because we have one transmission fail and it’s his, we have one valve spring (break) in the last 10 races and it’s his," Hendrick explained. “It was like that all season. I think Junior was ready for the year to end because we just felt like whatever happens, even if he runs good, something’s going to happen."

Let's look to the future and what we all hope and pray will be the come back year of the decade for Dale Jr!

One of the most significant additions to the 88 team is Chris “Sunshine" Heroy, the chief engineer for Martin's team that won five races and finished second in points in 2009.

According to Lance McGrew, the addition of Heroy will allow last year's lead engineer Tom Stewart to stay at home on race weekends to run seven-post simulations and other tests in preparation for upcoming events to have engineering data for the next race and perhaps the following week's race on Monday rather than the Wednesday BEFORE THE RACE.

"Dale commented on how much he enjoyed working with him," McGrew said. "Chris is just a real upbeat guy. That goes a long way when you're dealing with somebody introverted like Dale is. You've got to have strong characters around him."

Note: Most people don't realize how shy and introverted our Dale Jr really is when they see him at the track or on TV. I truly believe that Jr Nation pumps him up and keeps his confidence going when the media and others try to push him down. So, let's get ourselves pumped up for the new season and support our driver in every possible way including voting MPD at least once a day.

Other changes also noted, Chris Doherty was promoted to second engineer. Kevin Hulstein will serve as road crew mechanic (he previously worked for the 5 team in this position). Brad Pickens, Martin's gas man, will work for both teams in assembly.

McGrew said "the seven primary over-the-wall crew will remain the same and most of the changes were to make the 88-5 shop run more as a one-car team like the 24-48 adjacent shop."

"The difference has always been they [24 & 48] were created out of one team," McGrew said. "The 5 and 25 was put together from two separate entities. There's always been a lot of people that were diehard 5 guys or diehard 25 guys or 88 as they are now."

"So there was a lot of segregation that just WASN'T BENEFICIAL for the building."

Note: AMEN and hallelujah - Jr Nation is ecstatic that they finally figured that out!

Mr H also said Jr's been working out which definitely shows - he looked rather thin in the televised Danica announcement. But, as long as he feels great that's all that matters.

I just noticed that Dale Jr's odds in Las Vegas have been set at 30-1 to win the Cup. Hmmmm - I could retire early, perhaps I should make a wager. Anyone with me? The field is 25-1, come on guys that's really stupid.

Just a word of warning - TMZ now has a sports site, so the vultures will be lurking at the track and online seeking any information they can whether true or false. I wonder who they will be stalking? Not the runt of the pack I'm guessing, but our Dale Jr.

In other good news for Jr Nation - Dale Jr WILL BE IN the Bud Shootout. One of the new rules for 2010 is to include Past Budweiser Shootout Champs allowing Dale Jr (previous Shootout winner twice and Daytona winner twice and Kevin Harvick past Shootout and Daytona winner as well to run the race. Also, Matt Kenseth (past Cup Champ), Jeff Burton (Chase driver previous season), Joey Logano (Rookie of the year) and Jamie McMurray Kyle Busch, Michael Waltrip (past Daytona winners).

This tweak of the rules upset the Penske and Roush teams allowed in the race, but that's racing!! In a nutshell - former Budweiser Shootout race winners, former winners of the Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400, and the previous year’s ROTY winner will be eligible for entry. A driver also has to have competed in a Sprint Cup Series event within the last two years to enter.

I too cannot wait for Speedweek to begin and the sooner the better but without the frigid temps they are getting in Daytona today.

I found the interview with ClaireB after I wrote this where Lance said if both cars (5 and 48) are not in the Chase they will be sad. I'm thinking someone will be out of a job.

If parts and pieces don't start working better on the 88 car and not failing I have a strong feeling JR Motorsports will take themselves to Cup. In order for that to happen some sort of financial income has to come pouring in. Maybe GoDaddy will dump granddaddy and come over with Jr and Danica.

NASCAR officials informed Cup drivers during meetings this past week that they are strongly considering the move. Using a spoiler could add or reduce downforce, depending on the size and angle of the spoiler.

While it has been speculated that such a move could help Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has been a critic of the new car, the Hendrick Motorsports driver didn’t seem to know the impact the rule change might have on racing as he talked during a break at the Sprint Sound and Speed charity event.

“It’s more important that it seems to be what the fans want,” said Earnhardt Jr., who was 25th in points last season. “The fans want to get rid of the wing, get the old spoiler back. … I don’t really know what that will do to the racing. I don’t think it will change it a whole lot myself.

“I don’t know what that wing’s really doing back there, what the spoiler would be like on this car. We’ve never really tested it so I don’t really know what it would do to the racing. It could punch a little smaller hole in the air than the wing does and give us a little opportunity to get a little more grip on the front end, but it might do the opposite. You never know.”

TNT analyst Kyle Petty said he didn’t think the change would help specific drivers.

“You can’t call it ‘The Junior Rule’ [because] every driver forever has complained about the wing,” Petty said. “You can trace it back to every one of them. I don’t know how it’s going to change the racing, how it’s going to affect the racing. … I don’t think it will [help specific people] because of the car itself.

“We’re in such a small box now, you’re not going to see the big swings.”

Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards said the key is eliminating downforce.

“What they need to do is take all the downforce away from the race cars, then you don’t have any downforce to lose,” Edwards said. “If I don’t have anything to start with, it sure can’t get any worse. That’s what I think they need to do.

“The blade is a good idea. Taking the front splitter away is a good idea. Taking the cars, make them drive like they used to at Darlington, like they do at Atlanta, places like that where you to drive the race car, that’s what I think needs to be done. I don’t like to go down the corner, turn the wheel, find out how great my engineers are or aren’t. That’s not what I want to do in a race car. I want to go drive.”

An interview with DALE EARNHARDT JR., KASEY KAHNE, BUCKY COVINGTON, JOSH TURNER

KERRY THARP: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is kind enough right now to come on out and talk to you. Dale, as you look ahead to 2010 season, tell us your thoughts.
DALE EARNHARDT JR.: Well, it will get here as soon as it gets here, Daytona. We're kind of still in the middle of the off-season. I'm still enjoying taking it easy, doing whatever I want to do.
We've been doing a little bit of work. A lot of changes have happened with our race team to try to get better. We also have been working trying to prepare the Nationwide program and get it ready, shore up a few more relationships for that deal.
But, I don't know, off-season was good. Holidays were really, really good with my family and everything, so... Pretty happy.
KERRY THARP: Questions for Dale.

Q. Obviously you've hired Danica Patrick. Do you think she's going to struggle? Do you think she's going to adapt? Will it take her long? Are you the perfect person to be a car owner for her because you understand the attention she's going to be getting?
DALE EARNHARDT JR.: Yeah, I'm kind of going into it with an open mind. I mean, it's going to be an uphill battle for her to do well. But I think she can. She's a racecar driver. She should be able to adapt and do whatever she needs to do.
We're going to give her the best tools we can. I don't know if there's a perfect owner or whatever. But, you know, we'll just do the best we can for her. She has been in a car. Pretty happy with how that's gone. Pretty happy with what we've seen. I love her attitude. She gets along great with Tony, Jr. All that stuff is going better than planned. We just need to get to the racetrack. I mean, she's been around Daytona. Went to Orlando tested. Need to run some laps.
I hate testing myself. But, you know, the policy as it is now, it's difficult for someone like Danica to come in and really try to understand the cars, get to know them. We're going through that challenge, trying to help her as much as we can.
But feel pretty good about it. I don't know what she'll do. I wouldn't even know where to begin to sort of guess on how her performance will be or what her stats will look like. We'll just have to see.

Q. Dale, can you talk, there's been proposed rule changes to Daytona, perhaps no passing under the yellow line.
DALE EARNHARDT JR.: No, you can. They're going to let you, right?

Q. Right.
DALE EARNHARDT JR.: You said they're going to say no.

Q. I'm saying they're getting rid of that, perhaps getting rid of the no bump-drafts, all that stuff. How will that affect the competition?
DALE EARNHARDT JR.: It will be like going to a race about 10 years ago, I guess. They didn't have any of them rules then. We didn't see anything too crazy. I think it will just, you know -- racing will look a lot similar as it does now. I don't think you're going to see anything different. Passing below the yellow line, which will be a little different, but that's fine. There's a lot of asphalt down there, so it should be fine.

Q. Do you think if they take away the wing and go to a spoiler, will that help you? How will it impact the racing?
DALE EARNHARDT JR.: I don't really know. I think it's more important that it seems to be what the fans want. The fans want to get rid of the wing, get the old spoiler back. Q. Dale, Carl Edwards was in here earlier talking about Danica. He said he heard she's been fast in testing. You said she's been fast. Where have you been going? How has she been on the testing scene?
DALE EARNHARDT JR.: We went to Orlando. It rained. Only got a couple laps the first day. She really took to it pretty good. The lap times were pretty good. I don't know what the second bracket is there, but we were about 3 or 4/10ths faster than what some other Busch teams had tested there the week before and the week after.
We felt good. We put her out on the track with Kelly Bires for a little spell. He had a hard time really kind of hanging on her bumper there for a while. I wasn't there. I'm just going by what Tony, Jr. and them said.
I called Tony, Sr. first because I knew he would tell me the truth. He was blown away. So that told me that things were going really, really good if he was happy.
