I will never forget the day of the big announcement from the headquarters of Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR), in which in someway I was excited about cause it was giving Martin Truex, Jr (@MartinTruexJr56). a new beginning with a new up and coming team. With team owner Michael Waltrip stepping down to part time driver they needed someone who could represent NAPA Auto Parts as a driver and I truly think they chose the right guy. Truex had been seeing first hand what the MWR team was all about with his younger brother Ryan Truex (@RTruex00) who drives the No. 00 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota in the NASCAR Camping World East Series who is also the defending champion going into the 2010 season. I think it was the family bond between Michael Waltrip, his brother Darrell, and the Truex brothers is what makes the bond even stronger between owner and drivers.
Compared to Truex’s first few weeks at Daytona this past weekend at Auto Club Speedway was a complete 180 for him and the team. Yet in no way do I think it will hurt him as a driver, in no way was what happened yesterday his fault, Pat Tryson, or anyone else whom works on the No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts car. Things happen, people in the sport of NASCAR know this. After getting out of the car Sunday Truex said,
“It’s really unfortunate for the NAPA Toyota. We had a really good car and had something to build on. My best year ever in NASCAR Sprint Cup, the same thing happened. We went to Fontana and blew up. Hopefully this will be good for us too because we have to look at the silver lining in all of this. The sport is too tough not to.”
Seeing that he is understanding shows that he is ready to move onto the next race which is at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Knowing you have new blood with the driver and crew chief means you have new adventures. The first few weeks in Daytona showed a new energy which is a wonderful thing for the 2010 season, yes the finish is not what people were expecting, yet it taught a lesson of not giving up.
Good luck this season, Martin and the No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts Team,
Stacie
