Forecast Watkins Glen, NY – Click here for Current Weather Conditions – Look at Doppler Radar
Even with 36 hours out until Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen I still don’t have a perfect picture of what the weather will do, but then again that is the nature of a forecast when dealing with a slow moving warm front. I am confident, that today (Saturday) will be mainly dry. A Few high to mid level clouds could work through the southern part of New York and the Finger Lakes at times today as a complex of showers and thunderstorms weaken and dive southeast out of the western Great Lakes. Although unlikely it is possible that some of the rain associated with that complex holds together and brings a passing sprinkle or light shower to the Finger Lakes later today. The likelihood is very low.
Tonight through Sunday is where the forecast becomes very tricky. This has been the case all week long and I think this is the best we are going to get at this point as far as a forecast. As the above mentioned warm front moves into Southern and Western New York during the overnight Saturday there looks to be a good chance of some pretty good showers and embedded thunderstorms, the major headache is timing this feature. Right now from all I read and see the best chance of showers is overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. Then the forecast certainty becomes even less. There will be dry times and windows during the afternoon on Sunday with most of the rain falling during the overnight Saturday and Sunday morning (If a complex of showers and thunderstorms for overnight which I think looks very likely) As the day wears on and we enter the afternoon any shower activity becomes more scattered in nature. This makes the forecast even more complicated because you don’t know where any of these scattered showers or storms may form. Not to mention that the atmosphere looks pretty good that if any storm do form during the afternoon Sunday that these storms could be strong to severe with the main threat being damaging winds. If you are going to be at the Glen on Sunday I would bring rain gear (just in case) and also have some kind of radio to monitor weather conditions and the possibility of severe weather and know where you’re supposed to go if severe weather should develop Sunday afternoon.
